A groundbreaking duet choreographed by virtuoso Kathak contemporary dancers Aakash Odedra and Aditi Mangaldas is set to captivate audiences at Sadler’s Wells on April 12 and 13. “Mehek,” a poignant exploration of unspoken love, promises to be a mesmerizing journey into the depths of desire and resilience.

Inspired by tales of forbidden love and longing, “Mehek” delves into the taboo relationship between an older woman and a younger man. It promises to be a raw and powerful narrative, challenging societal norms and celebrating the authenticity of human emotion.

In a unique collaboration, Odedra and Mangaldas draw upon their unparalleled talent to bring this evocative story to life on stage. Supported by a team of skilled artists, including dramaturg Karthika Naïr and composer Nicki Wells, the production promises a sensory experience like no other.

One of the distinctive features of “Mehek” is its incorporation of real-life stories and memories shared by over 450 elders from communities across Leicester. Their narratives, woven into the fabric of the performance, add depth and authenticity to the production, making it a truly immersive experience.

The title “Mehek,” meaning essence, speaks to the enduring power of love and memory. Set against a backdrop of mirrors, designed by Tina Tzoka to evoke the ebb and flow of the sea, the stage becomes a canvas where rhythmic tales of desire unfold.

Composer Nicki Wells, accompanied by Indian percussionists Ashish Gangani and Hiren Chate, along with vocalist Faraz Ahmed, has crafted a mesmerizing sound-score that enhances the emotional resonance of the performance.

In addition to the premiere of “Mehek,” Sadler’s Wells will host the culmination of the Mehek Live project on April 12 as part of the Elixir Festival. This initiative, in partnership with Moving Together, showcases dance works created by participants, offering a platform for their creativity to shine.

A symposium featuring key figures involved in the production, including Lewis Major from Aakash Odedra Company and Emily Jackson from Moving Together, will provide insights into the impact of Mehek Live. The event will be live-streamed, ensuring that the lessons learned from this transformative project reach a wider audience.

“Mehek” promises to be a celebration of love, courage, and resilience, inviting audiences to embark on a journey of self-discovery and introspection. With its powerful narrative and spellbinding choreography, it is poised to leave an indelible mark on the contemporary dance landscape.
